The Saskatoon Fire Department responded to a call of natural gas smell in a dwelling unit in the 1000 block of 11th Street East around 8:40pm.
There was a fire in the wall surrounding a natural gas fire place. Crews extinguished a small fire along the top of the fireplace. Carbon monoxide readings were 27 parts per million and the gas utility company was called in.
It was determined that a small piece of wood know as a shim along the top of the fireplace sill plate heated to the point of igniting. The area was ventilated to clear the structure of carbon monoxide and smoke.
There were no injuries and the occupants of the residence were able to remain and did not require rehousing.
