Around 200,000 people paid tribute to Pope Emeritus Benedict the 16th during the public viewing over the last three days in St. Peter’s Basilica and this morning (Thurs) at the Vatican, his funeral was held. EWTN, the Global Catholic Television Network says Pope Francis presided over the funeral, with an estimated attendance of around 100,000 people.
The former Pope died on New Year’s Eve at the age of 95. He retired a decade ago, the first Pope in almost 600 years to do so. Pope Emeritus Benedict will be laid to rest in the tombs beneath the Basilica.
