An inefficient furnace can produce dangerous levels of carbon monoxide in your home, and unless you have carbon monoxide detectors, you won’t know it because it is colourless, tasteless and odourless.  It is often referred to as the Silent Killer.  Reliance Home Comfort spokesperson, Tyler Beresh, says prevention is the key.

He says have your furnace professionally inspected and cleaned annually because a dirty furnace is more likely to burn dirty.  Beresh also suggests having your chimney checked annually to make sure it isn’t blocked, and regularly check your dryer and furnace vents.

Beresh says that as of July, 2022, the provincial government has legislated carbon monoxide detectors for every home on every floor, along with smoke detectors.  Beresh says over the last three years, SaskEnergy has responded to about 1200 carbon monoxide calls.
