The cheques should be in the mail. The federal government’s quarterly carbon tax rebates should be arriving or may already have landed in your chequing account by now. However, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation points out that according to the Parliamentary Budget Officer’s report last year, what we pay in tax is more than what we get in rebates.

The carbon tax applies to residents of Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario where the provincial plans to cut carbon emissions didn’t reach what the federal government was asking for, so a carbon tax was initiated. Prairie Director of the CTF, Gage Haubrich says that according the the PBO report, Saskatchewan families can expect to pay $500 over what they receive in their rebates.

The carbon tax will increase to 14 cents per litre of gas and 12 cents per cubic metre of natural gas on April 1st. The CTF would like the federal government to ax this tax.
