Two Southey RCMP officers are being highlighted for their quick thinking in an incident last November. Constables Brandyn McCartney and Jacob Jungheim had responded to a call for service just before 5 in the morning and while there, someone commented about checking on the wellbeing of someone at another home in the area.
When they arrived, the RCMP officers noticed the lights were on, but they couldn’t get an answer at the door. Both noticed there was a smell of something like burnt toast. When looking in the windows, they noticed an odd haze, which they realized was floor-to-ceiling smoke. There were keys in the back door, which didn’t work, but they worked in the front door so one of the officers went inside and called to see if anyone was home.
An unresponsive woman was found in a bedroom. She began to wake up and officers say she was confused as the two were carrying her outside. She was assessed by EMS and was okay. Firefighers found severely burnt food inside a microwave, which was the culprit for the dense smoke.
