A scary scene in the second period was tough on the Saskatoon Blades, but so was the goaltending of Red Deer rookie Kyle Kelsey as the Rebels skated away with a 5-1 victory Friday.
Blue and Gold 19-year-old winger Justin Lies was stretchered off the ice about five-and-a-half minutes into the second frame after taking a high hit from Red Deer forward Carson Birnie with the puck nowhere in the vicinity. Lies tried to get up, but fell back down. The game was delayed about 15 minutes while training personnel from both teams plus doctors and E-M-Ts on the scene rallied to stabilize the Flin Flon product before he was taken to hospital as a precaution. Lies spent Friday night at a Red Deer hospital, but was expected to be released Saturday and rejoin the Bridge City Bunch in Calgary. Birnie was assessed a five minute interference major penalty and game misconduct. However, the Blades didn’t score on four shots on goal and a 1-0 deficit turned into a 4-0 Rebels lead shortly thereafter as Red Deer scored three times in a 2:13 span. Those goals were sandwiched by a pair of Kai Uchacz goals, his 37th and 38th of the season. Egor Sidorov (pictured) busted up Kelsey’s shutout bid with six-and-a-half minutes left in the third period. That was one of 11 shots on goal for the Belarussian winger. The win was the seventh straight at home for the 32-9-4 Rebels while 28-11-4 Saskatoon is winless in seven road games (0-5-2). They’ll try to burst that bubble Saturday against the Hitmen in Calgary.
