Hazel McCallion was known as “Hurricane Hazel” and was one of Canada’s longest serving Mayors.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford said in a statement that “Hazel passed away peacefully at her home in Mississauga early this morning at the incredible age of 101.”

She was Mayor of Mississauga, Ontario for 36 years and is credited with transforming the city from a bedroom community to the sixth largest city in Canada.

Premier Ford said her city, and Ontario are better places because of the amazing life of Hazel McCallion.
