Greg Fertuck has been in jail for over three-and-a-half years as his first degree murder trial continues, after various delays. He was charged in the death of his estranged wife, 51 year old Sheree Fertuck, in June of 2019. She was reported missing from the Kenaston area in December of 2015 and her body has never been found, although her truck, keys, coat and cell phone were found at a local gravel pit.
The trial was originally set to begin in March of 2021, but there was a delay because of a COVID-19 outbreak in Regina, where some of the witnesses would be traveling from. It was then set for September of the same year, and during the trial there were a series of voir dires, or trials within a trial, about whether certain evidence related to a Mr. Big sting would be admissible. Before a decision was announced, the Crown applied to re-open and submit new evidence.
The final delay to date was Fertuck firing his lawyers and deciding to represent himself. On April 28th, it’s expected the judge will rule on admissibility of voir dire evidence.
