Options are being explored for the future of the City of Saskatoon’s greenhouse, which was built in 1958, which has provided plants for all the City’s flowerpots, flower beds and indoor greenery and now has reached the end of its service life. A news release from the City notes that the greenhouse has been experiencing structural concerns due to its age and unique design. Last September, an engineering assessment recommended it be vacated.
In the meantime, there will still be flowers this year. The City has secured a private contractor for the plants, while assembling and maintaining the flowerpots, flowerbeds and indoor greenery will still be undertaken by city staff. Later this year Administration will report back to Council with longer-term recommendations for the future of the greenhouse program. The greenhouse is located within the Vic Rempel yards off Avenue P North.
