The recent melting and freezing—paired with a few heavy snowfalls this winter—could leave houses in the area vulnerable to ice damming.

Ice damming happens when a large block of ice prevents melted snow from draining off the roof, so water leaks into the attic and walls of the house.

Removing snow within two metres of the eaves is the most effective way to prevent damage.

SGI reminds that any removed snow should be piled two metres away from the foundation of the house to prevent water damage there, as well.

Not all insurance policies cover water damage caused by ice dams, so raking the roof is the best possible way to avoid the problem.
