Through a new scholarship and sponsorship from SGI, Saskatchewan Government Insurance says it is building on the legacy of a member of the Montreal Lake Cree Nation who was a Harvard University-educated Crown prosecutor, an author and a community advocate.

Harold Johnson published 12 books, including Firewater: How Alcohol is Killing My People (And Yours).

Minister Responsible for SGI, Don Morgan, says, “Harold was a critical influencer who engaged communities to change the story around alcohol. In 2016, he developed the vision for the Northern Alcohol Strategy – an initiative now supported by SGI – which empowers and inspires community collaboration to reduce alcohol-related harms.”

Recipients of the Harold Johnson Memorial Scholarship for post-secondary Indigenous students will be awarded a maximum of $2,500 per year for up to four years.
As well, the Harold Johnson Memorial Sponsorship will award one charitable or non-profit organization $10,000 for making a positive difference in the Indigenous community.  Johnson passed away February 9th last year from cancer.
