Between speed-skater Luca Veeman and gymnasts Jordan Carroll and Rylee Miller (pictured), Saskatchewan had a fabulous Friday at the Canada Winter Games in the Maritimes.
Each of Veeman, Carroll and Miller won a gold medal Friday while Veeman added a bronze medal and Miller tacked on a silver and a bronze medal. The day started in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, with Carroll winning the men’s pommel horse discipline in artistic gymnastics, the first gold medal for Saskatchewan at the 2023 Games. It was also the first gold medal in pommel horse for a Saskatchewan gymnast in Games’ history. Veeman followed up at the Halifax Oval by taking the gold in the men’s mass start long track event plus a bronze medal in the one thousand metres. That gave Veeman, the Saskatchewan flag bearer in the Opening Ceremonies to the Game, five total medals – a gold, two silver and two bronze. Back to Charlottetown and it was Miller’s turn to excite Saskatchewan followers. She started with a bronze medal in uneven bars, added a silver medal on the balance beam and became the first-ever Saskatchewan gymnast to win gold in the floor exercise discipline. Her performance made Miller the most decorated Saskatchewan female gymnast in Canada Games history and nearly doubled in one day what 56 years of Saskatchewan female artistic gymnasts had achieved with four previous medals. The three-person effort improved Saskatchewan’s medal haul at the Games to 15 total – three gold, six silver and six bronze medals. There’ll be at least one more medal from first half sports for Saskatchewan on Saturday when the men’s hockey team faces Ontario in the gold medal game while the Saskatchewan women’s ringette squad plays P-E-I for the bronze medal.
