SGI is doing the math and says for those facing seatbelt tickets last month, there are 78,225 reasons why they should have buckled up. There were 447 tickets issues for seatbelts and car seats in January and each of those tickets cost $175, for a total of $78,225. SGI adds that seatbelt tickets also come with three demerit points, which can lead to additional financial penalties or loss of insurance discounts under the Safe Driver Recognition program.
But, spokesperson Tyler McMurchy says the most important reason to wear a seatbelt is for safety, because it significantly increases the chance you will escape serious injury or death in an accident. Also in January, there were 369 impaired driving offences, 4,109 tickets for speeding and aggressive drive and 609 tickets for distracted driving.
