A former Director of Planning and Development with the City of Saskatoon says buildings are polarizing; you either like them or you don’t.

A survey, on a proposed development which consists of a 30-storey mixed use building at Eastlake and 12th Street in Nutana, is open until Tuesday (Feb. 28).

Alan Wallace says this development starts to encroach into the neighbourhood, and a is a block further away from the Bus Rapid Transit plan which the City intends to route down Broadway Avenue.

Wallace says rezoning of a 10 storey office building for the area is likely going to council soon and he expects it will be approved while a 17 storey building proposed for the area hasn’t started yet so he thinks there is a lot of speculation by the developer in proposing this concept.

Wallace also ponders why the public engagement is still in play because he understands a redesign of the concept is already underway.

Wallace also noted that while there would be stringent geo-technical requirements before a building like that could be built, it does create questions about how the development would impact stability of the riverbank off-site from the proposed building itself.
