The national sports networks will have more “lowlights” instead of “highlights” of Connor Bedard from Sunday’s 5-2 Saskatoon Blades’ victory over the phenom and the Pats in Regina.
The overwhelming consensus choice to be the first overall pick in this June’s N-H-L Draft, Bedard was held pointless for just the third time this season and was on the ice for all five Bridge City Bunch goals. The Blue and Gold did a masterful job of limiting the 17-year-old’s time and space as the Blades completed a sweep of all three games they played over the weekend in less than 48 hours. In the process, Saskatoon extended their winning streak to five games, their road winning run to six games, won for the ninth time in 10 games and improved their record to 42-13-5. Besides being a part of shutting down Bedard, Bridge City Bunch leading point-scorer Trevor Wong (pictured) notched his second career W-H-L hat-trick and assisted on one of Egor Sidorov’s two goals in the third period. The tallies were the 39th and 40th of the season for the 18-year-old Belarus product and turned out to be the game winning and insurance markers. With 89 points in the standings, the Blue and Gold are 10 points back of East Division and Eastern Conference-leading Winnipeg, are six points ahead of Central Division-leading Red Deer and 14 points up on Moose Jaw. The loss snapped Regina’s winning streak at six games, leaving them with a 31-25-3 record – still in sixth place in the Eastern Conference. The Blades are off until Wednesday when they host Swift Current.
