The Saskatoon Fire Department responded to a report of smoke in an apartment building shortly after 8 a.m. this morning in Saskatoon’s Varsity View neighbourhood.

When fire crews arrived, they found smoke in the upper floor hallways and residents had almost finished evacuating the building.

A fire in a 3rd floor mattress had been extinguished and that’s what caused the smoke.

Fire officials say the tenant extinguished the fire by using a portable extinguisher from the hallway. Crew used water pump tank to completely put it out.

The Fire Investigator say the cause of fire was determined to be an improper use of candle. Estimated smoke and fire damage is $300.

Meanwhile the Fire Investigator says a fire in the 300 block of Carleton Drive over the lunch hour on Saturday started in the garage, but the fire’s cause will remain undetermined. When crews arrived, they reported heavy flame being seen at the rear of the home in Saskatoon’s College Park neighbourhood. Damage is estimated at $75,000.

There is no update yet on the fire at an apartment building in Riversdale from Saturday which was called in about an hour after the house fire. The fire was located in a bathroom in one of the units and quickly extinguished.
