A 32 year old man charged with second degree murder in the death of 22 year old Brandon Applegate has pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced on Monday to 18 years in prison. Justin Troy Ballantyne will be eligible for parole in nine years.

At the time of his death, Mayor Charlie Clark had commented on social media that Applegate’s death is a blow to the community. He called him a courageous and articulate advocate for youth who was trying to fix the system that leads to too many youth ending up in gangs, incarcerated and with addictions.

On October 4th of 2020, Saskatoon Police responded to the 7-Eleven at the corner of Clarence Avenue and 8th Street East and found Brandon Applegate suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
