A speeding vehicle turned into a bit of an ordeal for officers of the La Ronge R-C-M-P detachment in the early morning hours of Sunday.

Just before 1 a.m. on March 12, officers responded to a report of a speeding vehicle along Highway 102. They located the vehicle driving on Cook Crescent in La Ronge and conducted a traffic stop. The driver and lone occupant of the vehicle, exited and attempted to flee on foot.

Police say the man resisted arrest to the point that a conducted energy weapon (C-E-W) was used to subdue him so that he could be taken into custody. Thirty-two-year-old Jared Ballantyne of La Ronge was found to be in possession of a machete. Ballantyne didn’t require medical attention while one of the officers sustained minor injuries.

Ballantyne was to appear in La Ronge Provincial Court on Monday to face charges of assault causing bodily harm on a peace officer, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, three counts of resisting arrest, carrying a concealed weapon and failure to comply an undertaking.
