First Nations children from ages six to fourteen will be competing in the Saskatchewan First Nations Spelling Bee today.

The event, first held in 2015, has over 150 children from all over Saskatchewan participate.

Both the organizers of the spelling bee and their partner, Spelling Bee Canada, believe the event supports the vocabulary, reading, and writing skills, and also gives participants a chance to travel provincially and nationally.

The top three placing participants in each of three age categories will receive trophies and cash prizes. The first-place winners will get the opportunity to go to Toronto for the National Championships in May.

The spelling bee begins at 9am and runs until 4pm at E.D. Feehan High School here in Saskatoon.
