The Edmonton Police Service says last Thursday morning shortly before 1 a.m. Constable Brett Ryan and Constable Travis Jordan responded to a family dispute call in an apartment complex near 114 Avenue and 132 Street.

When the two officers arrived, they were met by a 55-year-old woman outside of the complex and proceeded to her suite where she lived with her partner, a 73-year-old man and their 16-year-old son.

Police officials say immediately upon arriving at the suite, both constables were shot by the 16-year-old and were immediately incapacitated. A struggle reportedly ensued between the mother and son over the firearm, and the mother was shot. The suspect then turned the firearm on himself, taking his own life. The father was not physically injured during the shootings.

It has since been confirmed that neither officer discharged their firearm.

Autopsies were conducted on the weekend and the cause of death for both Constables is gunshot wounds with manner of death being homicide.

Funeral arrangements are still being made for the fallen officers but information on the public portion of their services will be released when available.
