The Canadian Taxpayers Federation criticizes the federal budget for raising taxes and increasing the deficit. Federal Director of the CTF, Franco Terrazzano, says the debt will total $1.2 trillion by the end of this year, with interest rates costing taxpayers almost $44 billion, reaching $50 billion by 2027. He notes that the government is providing some one-time GST rebates, but adds that there are no broad-based tax cuts. Terrazzano says, “Giving a few families back some of their GST money is really just an admission there’s a problem without looking for a serious solution.”
