More details are being made available regarding an arrest in Prince Albert where the suspect went into medical distress and remains in hospital in serious condition.

The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team is investigating the in-custody serious injury.

The Justice and Attorney General’s office says a vehicle reported stolen on March 31st was located overnight and at the time had three people including the registered owner inside. Other Prince Albert Police Service patrol units came to assist and while police tried to take a 40-year-old man into custody there was a struggle that put the vehicle into motion which is when it collided with a police cruiser.

According to a news release, officers then used conducted energy weapons, collapsible batons and pepper spray to take the man into custody. EMS attended the scene and saw the individual was in medical distress which is when he was taken to hospital.

The incident occurred on April 1st at approximately 2:23 a.m., in the 1100 block of 13th Street West in Prince Albert. The Justice and Attorney General’s office also says a loaded handgun was seized at the scene as evidence.

Prince Albert Police contacted SIRT at 3:30 a.m. that morning. A SIRT team consisting of the Civilian Executive Director and four SIRT Investigators was deployed to the scene in Prince Albert and began their investigation. A community liaison will also be appointed.
