In honour of the fifth anniversary of the Humboldt Broncos bus tragedy, the City of Humboldt is preparing a hybrid tribute that will be online in conjunction with the showing of videos at the Elgar Petersen Arena.

The crash killed 16 people and injured 13 others when a bus carrying the junior hockey team collided with a semi on April 6, 2018. The driver of the semi-truck failed to yield at a flashing stop sign at the intersection of Highways 35 and 335 approximately halfway between Nipawin and Tisdale.

A news release from the city says, “The Elgar Petersen Arena will be open to the public to come and go as they wish to pay their respects and reflect from 4:45 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. During this time, a compilation of videos will be played on the Jumbotron for those who choose to attend.”

Simultaneously, some videos from the playlist will be published on the city’s Facebook page and later published on the city’s 2017-18 Humboldt Broncos tribute page.

The Mayor has also proclaimed Thursday, April 6th, 2023, as “2017-18 Humboldt Broncos Day” in the City of Humboldt and encourages all citizens to observe a moment of silence at approximately 4:50 pm, no matter where they may be.
