The quick return to spring-like temperatures is creating the potential for ice jams on Swift Current Creek, the Moose Jaw River, the Qu’Appelle River and the Wood River.

The Water Security Agency (WSA) is concerned about the possibility of localized flooding caused by higher than previously predicted water flows.

Water was diverted Monday on the Swift Current Main Canal to reduce flows through the City of Swift Current. Outflows have been temporarily stopped at Duncairn Dam.

Further east, runoff within the headwaters of the Moose Jaw River basin is higher than expected. The WSA expects a similar situation to March 2022 when the channel through Moose Jaw was at capacity.

The WSA is also taking measures to manage water flows through the Qu’Appelle River system but warn this will not reduce the risk of ice jamming which can result in rapid changes in water levels.

The rapid melt will continue Tuesday with forecast highs of 19 and 20 degrees Celsius for Swift Current and Moose Jaw respectively. The WSA will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as conditions develop.
