The three Prairies Premiers have written a letter to Prime Minister Justin asking him to retract recent statements made by the federal Justice Minister regarding national resources.

Speaking with Indigenous leaders last week, David Lametti said he was committed to looking at rescinding the National Resources Transfer Agreements (NRTA), which dates back to the 1930’s. Several First Nations leaders, including the Grand Chief of the Prince Albert Grand Council, have called on the NRTA to be rescinded.

Premier Scott Moe, along with Premier Heather Stefanson in Manitoba and Premier Danielle Smith from Alberta, say the NRTA recognizes the Prairie Provinces have the same rights over resources that all of the other provinces already had.

The three Western Premiers add the federal government cannot unilaterally change the constitution and should not even consider stripping Saskatchewan’s, Alberta’s and Manitoba’s authority and control over natural resources.
