Saturday April 22 is International Earth Day and to coincide with that the Nature Conservancy of Canada has announced their 7th Annual tree planting event at their property at Meeting Lake, about 90 minutes north of Saskatoon.
The event will be held on May 13th, and it is open for members of the public of all ages to volunteer. Over the course of the day, 400 white spruce saplings will be planted in a part of the property where the trees and shrubs were previously cleared.
Kayla Burak, the Engagement Manager at NCC, says there are over 100 at-risk species in Saskatchewan, and over 600 across the country. Habitat loss is the main threat to these species.
Burak says that protecting the land is vital, especially in areas like Buffalo Pound, which serves as Regina’s main source of drinking water, and is a property that is crucial in the lives of many.
Anyone who’s interested is encouraged to sign up to volunteer at the tree planting event.
