The numbers from the March Traffic Safety Spotlight are in with 450 impaired driving offences reported. Spokesperson Tyler McMurchy notes that the legal limit in Saskatchewan is lower than .08 (point zero-eight). Exceeding .08 will mean a criminal charge, but penalties for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs start before that. It’s .04 for experienced drivers and new drivers aren’t allowed any alcohol in their system at all. For all drivers, there is zero tolerance for drugs.
From the 450 impaired driving offences, 250 were Criminal Code charges, 170 roadside licence suspensions for experienced drivers and 30 for new drivers. Other March results in the Traffic Safety Spotlight across the province include over 4,700 tickets for speeding and aggressive driving and 837 tickets for distracted driving.
