The Royal Canadian Navy Reserve celebrates 100 years of keeping Canada safe and secure this year. There are 24 Naval Reserve divisions in Canada with two in Saskatchewan: His Majesty’s Canadian Ship Unicorn in Saskatoon, established 100 years ago as of yesterday, and HMCS Queen in Regina.
Lieutenant Commander Su says some events taking place throughout the year to celebrate the anniversary include a march on May 7th in front of City Hall and a charity golf tournament, with the proceeds being donated to KidSport.
The Naval Reserve is a training ground for volunteers who may be interested in joining the Canadian Navy. Commodore Pat Montgomery says that was extremely important during the Second World War.
“We needed a mobilization base across the country. We needed skilled sailors across the country that Canada could call upon in times of need. Eighty per cent of our sailors were actually reservists during the Second World War,” says Montgomery.
A special ceremony was held at the Legislature in Regina to mark the 100 year milestone.
