The Saskatchewan SPCA is Cultivating Wellness. That’s the name of its two-day conference which begins today (Fri) at Dakota Dunes Resort. Spokesperson, Laura Zmud, says it’s for anyone who works or volunteers with animals, including those in veterinary medicine, SPCAs, humane societies, rescues and shelters, animal protection, livestock production and food animal production.
The Wellness Gathering, or conference, explores the mental health and well-being of animal welfare professionals and why it is so important for them and the animals they work with. One of the guest speakers is Dr. Savannah House, who is a Métis veterinarian in Alberta. Her topic is on the need for more diversity in veterinary medicine, and why it’s important, and how to grow diversity in the workplace. Other topics include dealing with grief and loss, chronic stress, and practicing mindfulness.
Zmud says, “We hope that we can provide tangible learning opportunities that individuals and employers can implement to support positive mental health and well-being, and to facilitate open, healthy conversations between peers.”
