The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency says the community of La Loche is being evacuated to Regina due to the threat of wildfire. The SPSA is updating the media at 11:30. A post on The Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs Facebook page says the Saulteaux First Nation was being evacuated last night. People wanting to head to the First Nation are being asked not to because it’s not safe and traffic could obstruct fire suppression efforts.
As of 4:30 this morning (Fri), the SPSA is reporting 14 active wildfires in the province. Six are not contained. Five are contained, while two are having ongoing assessment and at one fire, crews are protecting infrastructure. There have been 72 fires so far this year, which is almost double the five-year average of 39.
