Anyone who has booked a WestJet flight is advised to check the status of the flight as the 72-hour strike notice and/or lockout deadline is tomorrow morning (Fri), although the notice doesn’t mean a strike is a guarantee. A news release from WestJet Group says to be proactive, it is preparing for possible labour action by WestJet and Swoop pilots and has started taking down its network. This is to ensure an aircraft won’t be abandoned in a remote location without support and it enables earlier communication with guests and crew to minimize the potential for being stranded.
The Calgary-based company is parking the majority of its 737 and 787 fleet in a phased approach. WestJet Encore, WestJet Link and a limited number of 737 flights will continue to operate.
