As of 5:30 a.m. Tuesday morning there are 24 wildfires burning in Saskatchewan with five of those not contained. A couple of fires which have grown significantly are the Shaw fire, at almost 101,000 hectares, between Buffalo Narrows and Isle-a-la-Crosse and the Smith fire north of Pinehouse which is now over 129,000 hectares.
Highway 925 is open in the vicinity of the Vermette fire, which is 65,547 hectares in size and located southwest of Dillon. There have been 183 forest fires so far this year and 106 is the five-year average.
Most of central Saskatchewan is still under a special air quality statement due to wildfires including Unity, Wilkie, Biggar, up through Rosthern, Prince Albert, and across to the Manitoba border. A cold front will track through the area tonight clearing smoke out of the area.
Meanwhile, on the opposite end of the spectrum, there is a rainfall warning in place for Hudson Bay, Porcupine Plain, Melfort, Tisdale, Nipawin, Carrot River where Environment Canada says excessive rainfall is occurring. Stationary to slow moving showers in the area are producing large rainfall totals over the area and may cause localized flooding. The showers will taper off through the morning.
