On Saturday, Thompson, Manitoba RCMP responded to a report of a man running in front of traffic and punching vehicles on Princeton Drive. Shortly after, a report of an ambulance that had crashed into a tree.
Upon arrival, police determined the man driving the ambulance was the same one that had been jumping into traffic. A minivan was also damaged at that location, after being hit by the ambulance.
Emergency Medical Services arrived on the scene and removed the driver from the ambulance, and he and the five occupants of the minivan were all transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Through investigation, police determined that 20-year-old Draven Beardy from York Landing, Manitoba, stole the ambulance when EMS were on scene to attend the call related to a man, himself, punching vehicles. When he attempted to flee the scene, the ambulance collided with the minivan and crashed into a tree. Once in the hospital, Beardy threatened the medical staff. He was then treated and released into police custody.
Beardy is charged with five charges of Dangerous Operation Causing Bodily Harm, Uttering Threats, Theft of Vehicle, and Possession of Property Obtained by Crime. He remains in custody. Further charges may be pending.
