It was a touching moment at the premier women’s softball event on Thursday. The Canada Cup International Softball Championship is on in Surrey, British Columbia and after Ukraine’s U19 team won its first game of the tournament against the Prairie Renegades, the Saskatchewan team presented them with $1400 to go towards Ukraine’s softball program.
A news release from organizers of the Championship says the Prairie Renegades heard about the team’s quest to come to Canada, so they had bottle drives over the last month in their hometowns to raise some funds. It was thanks to Canadian sponsors the team was able to come to Canada. The team wanted to take part in the Women’s Softball World Cup in the spring, but the funds were needed for the war effort, so $60,000 was raised from individuals and British Columbia businesses to bring them to Surrey.
