A third person fighting one of Canada’s wildfires has died. The 41 year old pilot from Whitecourt, Alberta died after his helicopter crashed in northwest Alberta in the Peace River region around 6:13 Wednesday night. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada says on its website it will investigate the scene of the crash east of the town of Manning in the Peace River region.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau gives his condolences and notes that right now there are thousands upon thousands who are helping out across the country, keeping everyone safe. Alberta’s Minister of Forestry and Parks, Todd Loewen, says on behalf of Alberta’s government and all Albertans, he extends his deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the pilot. He too notes that while loved ones mourn, firefighters and first responders continue to fight Canada’s wildfires.
Nineteen-year-old firefighter Devyn Gale died after a tree fell on her near Revelstoke, B.C. and a few days later, 25-year-old firefighter Adam Yeadon died while fighting a wildfire in the Northwest Territories.
A nine-year-old boy from 100 Mile House, B.C. died last week from an asthma attack where it is believed wildfire smoke was a factor.
Across Canada there are 883 active wildfires and 554 of them are out of control. In Saskatchewan, there are 30 wildfires burning, with 315 so far this year. The five-year average is 285. The northern half of Saskatchewan is under an air quality advisory because of the wildfires.
