On Thursday. Onion Lake RCMP issued a Dangerous Person Alert and Onion Lake Cree Nation residents were told to stay inside and away from windows as officers looking for 35-year-old Randy Cooke. Late in the afternoon, he was located and arrested and now the RCMP are filling in the details.
Just after 9 Thursday morning, officers were told Cooke had a firearm and was causing damage at a home on the Cree Nation. Onion Lake RCMP found him walking outside and report that he appeared to be in possession of a firearm. Police say he ignored commands to drop the gun and instead ran into a wooded area.
A perimeter was set up to secure the area and maintain public and officer safety. More officers were brought in from the Turtleford and Kitscoty Detachments and from the Critical Incident Response Team, which includes the Emergency Response Team and Police Dog Services. Around 4:10, police were told that Cooke was inside a nearby home and was arrested without incident. Cooke is charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and mischief under $5,000.
Onion Lake RCMP is thankful for all the support received from local partners, responding units and residents in the Onion Lake community.
