The City of Regina’s Manager thanks Fire Chief Layne Jackson for prioritizing public safety in the midst of an incredibly complex situation with tents popping up this summer on the City Hall Courtyard. It was announced on Thursday that the encampment would be decommissioned for public safety after three fires in five days. Today (Fri), there were two more fires. Niki Anderson believes the Chief’s decision has saved lives.
She says she is deeply concerned by public comments of at least one elected official, who claims that getting rid of the tents and getting everyone to leave is an affront to the democratic process. Anderson states that elected officials who claim they should have been consulted before this decision was made are instead placing the public at greater risk by inappropriately challenging public safety experts. She didn’t name the elected official/s.
City Hall will be back open to the public on Monday.
