It was a hot one on Thursday with three records broken and one equaled in Saskatchewan. Environment Canada meteorologist Sara Hoffman says there was no heat warning issued, but their criteria is for it to be at least two days of hotter temperatures, and this was just a one day event.
Lucky Lake was the province’s hot spot at 38 degrees, handily breaking its record set in 2001 of 34.4 degrees. Elbow tied its record of 37.8 set in 2001. Saskatoon hit 37.4 yesterday (Thurs). Its previous record was 36.2 in 2001. Watrous set a new record of 35.5 with a previous record at 34.5 in 1953.
Hoffman notes that there is smoke haze across many areas of the province including as far south as Moose Jaw. It’s expected to improve today (Fri) and ebb and flow through the weekend. She adds that hotter temperatures and smoke can compound issues for those with health conditions, so she urges everyone to be cautious and stay hydrated. The smoke is coming from wildfires in Saskatchewan’s north as well as the Northwest Territories.
Here is a preliminary list from Environment Canada.
