People living on or using Idylwyld Crescent will notice a white smoke coming out of their roofs and wafting around their property tomorrow. This is because the City’s sewer maintenance staff will be using a non-toxic liquid smoke to identify weak points in the sewer’s sanitary system. The oil-based, non-toxic, odorless smoke imitates the properties of invisible sewer gases. It will be poured into the sanitary sewer manholes in the street, and weak points or openings will be identified by tracking the smoke through the pipes.
It is possible for the smoke to enter homes through old drain traps or plumbing that is rarely used. To prevent this, residents and businesses in the testing area have been advised to run water into all drains for one minute the morning of the testing.
