The Prairie Director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation says 30 per cent of the price of gas at the pump is taxes. The CTF has released its 25th annual Gas Tax Honesty Report which indicates provincial and federal taxes on gas cost 47 cents per litre in Saskatchewan.
Gage Haubrich notes that Premier Scott Moe rightly calls out the cost of the federal carbon tax, but refuses to cut the provincial gas tax like other provinces have done. Alberta, Ontario and Newfoundland and Labrador all cut taxes to Save residents money. Haubrich points out that the provincial tax of 15 cents per litre is actually a cent higher than the federal carbon tax.
He doesn’t believe carbon taxes reduce emissions, saying for years British Columbia had one of the highest carbon taxes in the world, but their emissions went up. Haubrich suggests it’s hard for Canada to compete when trading internationally because Canadian businesses are going up against countries that don’t have these types of policies.
The CTF urges both the province and the federal government to lower their gas taxes to give people an economic break. Taxes at the pump in Saskatchewan include provincial and federal excise taxes, a federal sales tax and the carbon tax.
