Artificial intelligence is being used to develop vaccines for Coronaviruses that don’t exist yet at the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization in Saskatoon.
Director and CEO of VIDO, Dr. Volker Gerdts, says it is very challenging to predict how viruses will mutate, however, it can be done. Using computational biology, A.I., and bioinformatics, mutations can be predicted, as well as how they change the structure of the pathogens. Gerdts says this allows researchers to make vaccines today for tomorrow’s pathogens.
He hopes that this next generation vaccine will enter clinical trials within the next two to three years.

On that note, a Covid19 vaccine developed by VIDO right here in Saskatoon is undergoing clinical trials right now. The trials are happening in both Africa and Canada.

In just a few years, VIDO will also be able to house the most severe and contagious pathogens on the planet, as they are working on becoming a level-four containment facility, the highest level there is.
