Eighty-four people have sent comments to the City of Saskatoon with their thoughts on a possible name change for John A Macdonald Road and one resident has requested to speak to City Council tomorrow (Wed) morning. Council will be considering the Planning, Development and Community Services committee report for the name miyo-wâhkôhtowin, pronounced meeyo wah KOE toh WIN, to be added to the Names Master List and to be endorsed as the new name for John A. Macdonald Road.
At the PDCS meeting earlier this month, Indigenous Initiatives Director, Melissa Cote, explained that Sir John A Macdonald played a significant role in the development of Canada’s Indian residential school system, which continues to negatively affect Indigenous families to this day. If approved, it will still need a bylaw drawn up and the name would have to be registered through the Information Services Corporation.
