The traffic safety spotlight in September will shine on school zones. SGI says Saskatoon Police and other law enforcement agencies will be spending some extra time in school zones this month.
The government insurer says speeding in school zones comes with hefty fines. For example, getting caught driving 20 km/h over the limit results in a $310 ticket. SGI points out that the cost of that ticket increases the faster you go. Drivers will also receive three demerit points under the Safe Driver Recognition program.
SGI President and CEO Penny McCune says excited kids may not always be paying attention to vehicle traffic. “Reducing your speed gives you more time to react and prevent a collision,” said McCune.
SGI also strongly suggests that drivers slow down when school buses are stopped with amber lights flashing to ensure kids aren’t about to pop out from the bus before passing. As well, avoid U-turns in school zones; some municipalities have by-laws that prohibit them.
