HMCS Unicorn Freedom of the City Parade and Recommissioning Ceremony will take place this Saturday in Saskatoon. Saskatoon Media Group had mentioned it was taking place last weekend but in fact it is this weekend. The parade starts at 10 a.m. from HMCS Unicorn across fourth Avenue from City Hall. It proceeds around the block back to the naval facility with a stop in front of City Hall on 3rd Avenue for the Freedom of the City ceremony.
The event marks the continuation of the Naval Reserve’s centennial celebration with the parade and ceremony including representatives from the City of Saskatoon and the Saskatoon Police Service. The parade is a tradition that dates back over 400 years that includes “formal interactions between the Commanding Officer of HMCS Unicorn, a representative of the Saskatoon City Police who will barricade the road, and the City of Saskatoon who will formally reaffirm the Freedom of the City. The reviewing officer for the parade will be Vice-Admiral (retired) Craig Baines, the 37th Commander of the Royal Canadian Navy.
