Canada’s Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Chrystia Freeland and Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, Francois-Philippe Champagne are meeting with executives from the five top grocery chains Monday. On her way into the meeting, Freeland said the two most important things for Canadians today are prices and interest rates and says her government is going to do everything in its power to make sure prices stabilize.
NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says inviting the CEOs of the big grocery companies to Ottawa has already been done and it didn’t work.
And he says the best-case scenario from the Liberals is to have the corporations stabilize their prices which he describes as ridiculous.
Last week, the Liberal government demanded the five large grocery companies in the country including Loblaws, Metro, Empire Company, Costco and Walmart, come up with a concrete plan, by Thanksgiving, that will decrease food costs.
Singh says the NDP is proposing a plan which would force the big corporations to cease anti-competitive behavior. He points to Halifax where Dollarama’s which sell cheaper bread can’t sell cheaper bread if it is located near a Sobey’s.
Singh says the NDP wants to see action.
“What we’re proposing is to take them on while the Conservatives just want to blame and complain in the corner, we’re proposing real solutions.”
