Prime Minister Justin Trudeau understands that India is a country of growing importance as a trade partner but says the rule of law is of the utmost and foundational importance in Canada in a world where international rules-based order matters. He was responding to questions about his announcement on Monday that there is credible evidence the Government of India is linked to the death of a prominent Canadian Sikh leader.
Trudeau calls on the Government of India to engage with Canada to establish processes to discover and uncover the truth of the matter and to allow justice and accountability to be served. The Prime Minister told reporters his government isn’t looking to provoke or cause problems, “but we are unequivocal around the rule of law and unequivocal about the importance of protecting Canadians and standing up for our values.”
