Last month, police in Saskatchewan issued 837 tickets for distracted driving offences, according to SGI with its monthly Traffic Safety Spotlight. Of those, 729 were for using a cellphone while driving and 108 for driving without due care and attention. Tickets for both offences start at $580 and four demerits. If you are on your second offence within a year, SGI spokesperson Tyler McMurchy says that will cost you $1,400 and a seven-day vehicle impoundment. Also in August, police recorded 494 impaired driving offences, 419 tickets for seatbelt or car seat offences and 4,880 tickets for speeding and aggressive driving.
SGI also highlights some driving offences which a Regina Police officer has mentioned on social media. In recent weeks, Constable Mike “Hawkeye” Steel, has caught drivers texting, watching YouTube videos and a couple doing bedroom activities while driving. In a Facebook post, he explains that he noticed the vehicle on a busy Saturday night on Ring Road.
“So it’s very busy traffic which is very concerning, and also the fact that while I was pulling them over, the female passenger didn’t have her seatbelt on. She finished her glass of wine while we were pulling over and threw the bottle in the backseat and then she lied about her name so she got a few tickets and then the driver didn’t have his license on him and got a ticket for driving without due care and attention.”
