A state of emergency has been declared on Red Pheasant Cree Nation after seven people overdosed in one day due to the escalating drug problem in the community.
The leadership of the nation, which is 27 kilometres south of North Battleford, is concerned about the safety of their people, as many are living in fear and are reluctant to cooperate with the RCMP, because they fear retaliation.
Chief Lux Benson says he has issued a warning to evict the residents of houses where drug activity is suspected. He adds that utilities will be disconnected, and doors and windows be boarded up. Benson urges the RCMP to help the community address this challenge by increasing their presence, resources, and collaboration.
Red Pheasant leaders are also calling on both the federal health minister and provincial government to discuss how an effective healthcare strategy can be delivered to First Nations.
