The Board Chair of BHP told shareholders during a virtual event that its Jansen potash mine in Saskatchewan is part of the mining company’s future commodity portfolio along with investments in copper and nickel, and it’s expected the mine will be on stream in late 2026.
Ken MacKenzie calls potash an exciting new commodity for BHP.
He says the Jansen mine, about 140 kilometres east of Saskatoon, will be one of the largest potash mines along with the lowest cost in the world.
As well, it will have lower operational greenhouse gas emissions and the water use intensity will be lower relative to other potash mines.
MacKenzie adds there will be options to grow the business for decades and decades because there is over a hundred years of ore in the ground.
BHP’s website states that since 2015, the company has contributed over $44 million in the province to support community initiatives, including Opportunities Agreements with six First Nations.
