The intent of a Memorandum of Understanding being signed today (Sat) between the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations and USask’s College of Law is to advance legal reform in child welfare systems for First Nations communities in Saskatchewan.
FSIN Vice Chief E. Dutch Lerat, says in the last three years, Bill C-92 has only been mentioned three times in Saskatchewan provincial courts.
The federal legislation recognizes Indigenous peoples’ jurisdiction of child and family services as part of their inherent right to self-government and self-determination.
A joint news release from the university and FSIN says through this MOU, both parties intend to deepen their collaboration in academic and community-led research for the betterment of First Nations children, youth and families.
